Phlebotomy is a very rewarding job that shows great potential in terms of developing a career and getting a good salary. But because phlebotomy is considerable a more obscure field, people may not have a good idea of how exactly they can become a phlebotomist.
For those of you who don’t know already, the phlebotomist is the person responsible for drawing out blood from humans or animals for the sake of various diagnoses and although this may seem like an easy thing to do, you will find out it is not as it seems. The phlebotomist’s success depends not only on his or her ability to draw blood from their patients according to prescribed instructions from the doctor but also on performing the procedure as smoothly as possible while keeping the patients comfortable, causing them minimum pain or discomfort.
Becoming a phlebotomist is closely connected to the location you are in. But as with most professions, the usual course of action is enrolling in a phlebotomy program or in a training course. The length of the study may vary as well depending on your approach of the educational part of the process. Therefore if you opt to earn your Associates Degree you will finish after about two years whereas if you were to enroll in specific phlebotomy programs you may finish within a year.
When setting out to learn how to become a phlebotomist you can expect coursework regarding anatomy and physiology but also sample collection and terminology. Besides these you may receive training regarding patient information and care as well.
So why should anybody want to become certified in phlebotomy? After all, only two states in the USA legally require certification in order to practice phlebotomy and jobs in this field are in very high demand these days.
The thing is that employers are hesitant to hire people without certification and there is a reason for this. Getting a phlebotomy certification would mean that you are really serious about starting a career in phlebotomy and you consider this to be a priority.
But this is not the only reason why someone would want to get a phlebotomy certification. Besides getting recognition for your efforts, there is the desire of earning more money for the work you are doing. By having phlebotomy certification you will be able to earn more money for your work than other people that practice phlebotomy but don’t have a certification for it.
